Grassland Remnant Profiles

Regional grassland profiles are being created by compiling the available research literature derived from remnants within each of eight regional grassland types, and integrating them with our more detailed OGGN sampling results where available. There is currently no standardized sub-classification of North American grasslands, therefore our grassland types are selected from the US Forest Service Ecoregions, or Landfire mapping systems. Plant inventories were more common in the literature than soil assessments, and very little attention has been given to documenting litter. Some of the plant scientific names listed were updated using Kew Royal Botanic Gardens’ Plants of the World Online database. Soil data were usually limited to texture, pH, and either soil organic matter or organic carbon, with fewer measurements of water holding capacity or nutrient concentrations. Biological indicators have largely been measured only in the most recent studies. Limitations of methodological comparisons will soon be laid out in a new tab, entitled Assessing Soil Health.
